The Galaxy and it's occupants

There are 10 players in this game and it was set up via the Rock, Paper, Shotgun forums, of which I am a regular reader. From the people playing, I know that at least 3 of us are previous winners. Knowing that, along with the fact that this was especially set up and with a password tells me that I'm not in noobland anymore and I'm now swimming with the big fish.

This is the initial setup of my new game:

It looks like my immediate threat is 3-fold; yellows to my west, bright red to my south-west and dark red to my south-east.

As with the last game, I'll concentrate on researching speed so that my stupidly slow ships will be able to react to any threats that come my way as well as move attacks with style and grace as my opponents zimmer-frame themselves around the galaxy. I'm going to pump my money mainly into economy as I found that last game, my economy was probably what won it for me. If I have the money to buy more industry, I'll have more ships in the long run. At least, this is the plan.

I've also sent initial "Alliance" feelers out to the people furthest away from me; light green, dark green and pink. I've proposed tech trades with them informing them that we are of no threat to each other and our trades will help us level up our tech twice the speed, mutually beneficial to us both. Of course, I haven't mentioned that I've proposed this with others, I like them to feel special. I've already had 2 responses today from dark green and pink for range and weapon strength respectively.

Like all NP games, I've sent my initial fleets to the gobble up the closest stars first. The only slight problem I have at the moment is that some of the closest stars are out of ship "jump" range. That means I'll need the Range upgrade pretty soon - let's hope my "Alliance" comes through for me here.
